News from Hucknall and Linby Dolphins Swimming Club

Poolside helpers course

Those who swim on Tuesdays will have seen that we have a number of new poolside helpers being trained. This is the ASA’s Poolside Helpers course which is taking place over a 4-week period. The idea is to have a few more people who can help out on poolside and offer cover when needed, particularly over the summer when the existing trainers are on holiday. This is something we may look to run again, particularly to give the older swimmers something extra to aim for.

Open Galas

It would be good to encourage some of the older, established gala swimmers the opportunity to take part in open galas put on by other clubs. When details come through we will put them on the notice board and publicise through the newsletter. We would like to emphasise that is the swimmers and their parents responsibility to enter themselves for these galas although it might be good for a few swimmers to get together to enter so they go together.

Please note, when they enter an open gala swimmers will need to upgrade their ASA membership (approx £13 more) as the majority of our swimmers are on a lower category membership. Please see Eddie to do this.

Open galas often take place over a whole day in a morning and afternoon session. One suggestion – you may want to just enter races in the morning or afternoon sessions – it can be a long day with a fair bit of waiting around otherwise.

Northern Open Gala

So the first open gala is being put on by Northern Swimming Club at Beechdale Pool on

25th June. Age groups are 9 – 14 years (age as date of gala). Details are on the notice board.

Closing date for entries is 27th May – so you will need to act fast.

County Championships

To give our swimmers something else to aim for we will publicise qualification times for the County Championships. We will put them shortly on the notice board and suggest swimmers talk to their coach if they are interested.

A couple of gala issues

We have had a couple of galas in Worksop and the cost of the bus is in the region of £200 each time. At the last committee meeting we agreed that we will need to make a small charge in future to go towards this cost.

Swimming caps – please can all girls wear swimming caps at galas (and ideally at training also). Caps make a difference to times and make a personal best time more likely.

Lottery grant

We are making a claim through the lotteries Awards for All scheme for equipment that will benefit all our swimmers. We will keep you posted how this goes.
